26 Terabit per second transfer rate achieved

German and Swiss science are awesome.. I just wanted to put that out there. Anyways, whilst we’re on the topic of German scientists, lets talk about a new data transfer rate that was achieved in Germany. Twenty-six terabits per second. All of this, with just one laser. Now I know what you’re thinking: “That’s nothing, 100 terabits was achieved not that long ago”. To that, I would say that you’re right, but with one exception: that was with 370 lasers… Wait, what was that? That’s not what you were thinking? Oh… well my point still holds, there’s no comparison between the two. One has practical applications in the real world, and the other is just something nerds will build in their basements.

Geek Pride Day this Wednesday

Geeks around the world take very little time to ponder and be proud of their amazing accomplishments. On Wednesday, Geek Pride day is celebrating its fifth year in existence. Its claim is that everyone has the right to be a nerd or geek, without feeling bad about saying it. However, from my acts, I know that really nerdy geeky geeks (A.K.A. me), don’t care about being thought of as a geek. And I think this should go for everyone, if you’re a geek or a nerd, be proud. Walk up to people and tell them you’re a nerd/geek. It’s an awesome culture, with awesome people.

Also on this day is Towel day, a day for fans of A Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, can show their love of the books by carrying (don’t wear them… Please) a towel. Yet another event on this day, is Star Wars day, where Star Wars fans around the globe can celebrate the series. I, for one (just one… *sigh*) will be carrying both a towel, and a light-saber.

Review: Candy Train

4th and Battery Studios, a subsidiary of PopCap Games, on Thursday released their second game, Candy Train. Unlike their last game, this one doesn’t involve horses and meat-grinders, it involves a dreadfully disorganized series of tracks, that one must arrange so an ever speedier train doesn’t crash. It’s easy enough that you won’t put it away in five minutes, but it’s not so hard that it makes one feel moronic.

The best thing about the game… Is it’s free, and it will be, permanently. 4th and Battery’s other game Unpleasant Horse is also available for free. They are planning on releasing yet another game, in a few weeks.

Apple Store 2.0

On Sunday, in celebration of their tenth anniversary, Apple released an “update” to their stores. It was a rather minor update, but still a noticeable one. Apple has replaced the usual paper info-cards, placed next to products, with… iPads. The info-Pads (i for info) are also capable of “calling” over an Apple employee.

Apple also updated their iPhone app, with more in-store features, and an option to custom build a compute (better processor, more RAM, etc.). All of these updates have gone live, and are available everywhere.

Apple is now the third most popular portable device manfacfurer

Today Apple quietly slipped into third most popular portable device manufacturer. This puts them ahead of Asus, Lenovo, Toshiba, and Dell. This is most likely attributed to their two most recent releases: the iPhone, and iPad. This probably comes as no surprise to anyone, but it is news worthy.

Mars Rover Spirit not to survive martian winter

The Mars Rover was both a success, and a failure. A few months back it got trapped in a sand pit, and has been stuck ever since. It is still broadcasting a signal as it’s power source is a solar panel on it’s head (Kind of like WALL-E).

Mars’ winters get down well below -100º Fahrenheit. This is too cold for the Spirit considering it isn’t getting enough power for it’s heaters to power on.

Problems with coolant shuts parts of ISS down

The International Space Station has a few rather large labs onboard. This labs need coolant to operate correctly. Today NASA reported that they had some coolant problems which made the shut down parts of the ISS.
The crew had a very rude awakening as the coolant problem was reported as a short circuit at first, and the end result was a multiple alarms going off.
They don’t yet know what happen, but they know it was something to do with the pump module in the ammonia coolant loop.
Hopefully this will get fixed quickly, and hopefully none of their parts need to be jettisoned.

Droid getting Android 2.2 next week

Android 2.2 is a big release for the Android market. They have been touting it for about two months. But haven’t released on very many devices.
The Droid is one of the most popular android devices out there. It’s getting the new release of the OS next week (maybe). If you have Droid this should speed up your phone dramatically.
