Review: iOS 5

The black ravens crowed, as the moon set over the mountains. The hills were being sprinkled with the dappling sunlight of the our distant star. As the Sun rose, so did this Wednesday’s exquisite prospects. The early-risers shook with eagerness for the eminent release of an establishments’ greatest commodity yet. The mane-adoptos rushing to their Antikythera to see if the aforementioned release had been unleashed from its domain. But, alas it had not yet been unleashed upon the world… But, wait! Come hither. See yonder, the small glimmer? Ay, that my friends be a sign of the noteworthy and glorious release of the fifth iteration of the I-operation-system.

After reading this, you’re most likely a little confused; however, some of you may see that it is merely a allegory of yesterday’s release of Apple’s iOS 5. As all of you most likely already know, the updating process took awhile… Apple was experiencing quite a few issues with their update servers. At the time of this writing, the updating process is getting exponentially faster, so if you haven’t yet updated, now would be the time.

One thing to note, upon updating your iPhone, you will be forced to restore your iPhone to the new OS. In other words, you’ll have to backup all of your applications, music, books, videos, etc. prior to updating. If you don’t, you’ll run the risk of either losing the data, or being required to re-install all of the aforementioned products. Another thing to keep in mind, is that the updating process can take over two hours (if you have a fast internet connection). You’ll need to install iTunes 10.5 before updating any of your devices (a 65MB file). You’ll also need to download the update itself onto your computer (a 700MB file!).

Once you’ve updated your iPhone, you’ll be presented with a few screens of set-up information (location services, iCloud, etc.). After that, you’ll get your regular homescreen, and you’ll be able to use your phone normally (hopefully).

If you don’t already know, the new features of iOS 5 include such things as a new Notification Center, OTA updates (Over The Air updates… This includes delta updates, as well as full updates), iCloud, Newsstand, Safari improvements, Mail improvements (not that kind), Reminders (with location nets), an updated camera app, WiFi syncing, and iMessages… Just to name a few.

The update if available now (it’s free!); however, some of the older generations of the iDevices will not be able to support iOS 5 (iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, iPod Touch 2G, etc. ).

What do you think? Have you had any issues with the update? Tell us in the comments section below.
