The world shuttered today as Google announced its upcoming $12.5 billion acqusation of Motorola Mobility. Google made a fairly strong and interesting statement by doing so, the statement being, that there is now a possibility of a better and more streamlined interface on Motorola devices, which detracts from their previous record of having open-source devices and software.
People are slightly concerned that Google will now be increasingly lax about updating and optimizing their operating system for other hardware manufacturers (namely Samsung, HTC, and TMobile). The move; however, is unsurprising, Motorola Mobility’s patents are incredible and most likely the reason for Google’s decision.
Google claims that the acqusation won’t have any effect on their support for other manufacturers; however, the Greeks said it was just a horse, but was it? Only time will tell.
The only consolation with the event, is that Google has created its own phones before, and the Nexus S and One were only relatively small hits in the market but never really took off, even though they had Google’s full support.
